Stewart Motha is Professor of Law at Birkbeck Law School, University of London. He served as Executive Dean of Law from 2016-22; and Managing Editor of Law & Critique, 2015-2020. He has published widely on issues of sovereignty, memory, history, and decolonisation. His current research is focused on issues of climate justice, and legal responses to ecological crises. In the face of anthropogenic climate change, Stewart explores the multiple forms and sources of legal norms (heteronomy) in a historical terrain of distinctions between law and nature.

Stewart's most recent book, Archiving Sovereignty: Law, History, Violence was published in 2018 by Michigan University Press. 

In 2020 Stewart launched an interdisciplinary podcast series called COUNTERSIGN.
